What is a Browser?
The software on your computer that you use to surf the internet. The most common example of a browser is Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
What is a Search Engine?
There are billions of pages on the Internet, so finding what you want would be much more difficult than finding a needle in a haystack, if it weren't for search engines. A search engine such as Google can be very effective at helping you find what you are looking for. You just type in keywords, hit the Enter key, and it will give you a list of web sites to look at.
What is a Keyword?
The word or words that the potential client types into the search engine
What is a Robot?
Search engines use robots to automatically retrieve information from web pages
What is Content?
The information on a web site that is available via a browser
What is a Link?
When you click on a link you make the browser go to a new location on the same page, a different page or a different web site
What is HTML?
Hyper Text Markup Language - all web pages are written in markup language.
What does a Style Sheet do?
HTML is about content and the Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) is about how you present the content. For example, both the question above and this answer use the HTML tag 'DIV'. The question is centered, uses bold typeface, and is underlined. The answer is left justified, uses a regular typeface & font size, and is not underlined. The different attributes of question and answer are set using the style sheet.
What is Hosting?
A hosting package gives you exclusive use of space on a web server (a reliable computer running web server software) that is permanently and resiliently connected to the internet at a unique internet address.
Why does a Web Site have to be Published?
Publishing is the process of transferring the files from the computer used to build the web site onto the web server. Once on the web server, the site is 'live'.
